Állatbarát turistáskodás - How to travel animal-friendly

If you're traveling, probably won't care too much about how to avoid animal-cruel tourist attractions or how to travel animal- and nature-friendly. Nature-, environment-friendly, sustainability during traveling - these would worth a Ph.D. dissertation, so now, let's just talk about animals.
For a simple tourist, it is really hard to decide, which tourist attraction would be ethical for the animals and nature, but if someone is interested, it's easy to find a lot of information on the internet. In this post, I'll try to collect the most important and famous/infamous attractions with some background information so you can decide whether you would like to visit them or not.
A little paragraph about the zoos: you should check the ratings on the internet, but a lot of zoos (mostly the WAZA or EAZA members) are taking a big part of conservation, protecting the endangered species, participating in international conservation programs.

Delfinek/ Marine mammals
Ajánlom mindenkinek a The cove vagy a Blackfish című filmeket.
My first, bigger experience with animals was in a dolphinarium. I was around 15 and no idea about the truth, what is really going on in these aquariums, so I was so happy, words could not describe it. Since I was getting older, and more conscious, I would not go close to these 'institutes'.
Some facts:
- zoos (WAZA members) cannot take animals from the wild, they have to renew their populations from other zoos, but marine mammals' reproduction is really weak in captivity and really dangerous for them.
- Marine mammals are highly socials, living in families, they are in close kinship inside the group. Capturing them looks like this: herding a group into a cove, slaughtering most of the dolphins, while some chosen (according to their age, gender, health) are watching while their relatives are bathing in their own blood, dying, suffering. The chosen ones are going to be slaves in an aquarium, with totally stranger other dolphins, they have to live in a group where they have no bonding at all. And while in the wild they are migrating thousands of miles, in captivity, they are vegetating, just try to imagine, how many times they should swim around in the tank to swim the same amount, or at least, swim enough for them....
So everyone who is thinking about going to a dolphin-/orca-show or swim with them in captivity, please watch these movies first: BlackfishThe cove.
And if you want to know more about this issue, please check the Sea Shepherd webpage.
And if you still want to meet/swim with them, please, only do it IN THE WILD, not with slaves (you can find good tips here).

This is my second big dream (after swimming with the whales): swimming with whalesharks. I was on an island at the Philippines during the summer, where I could easily achieve this dream: Oslob, Cebu., but after talking with some locals, I decided not to do. And this was a good choice.
It's like 100% chance to swim with them there, but there's a price for it. They are being fed, so they are not leaving the area, they stop their migration. Spiderboats are bumping them, tourists are kicking them, so they have a lot of injuries, and getting a lot of stress. This webpage collected all the information why NOT to swim with them there, and why chose an opportunity in the wild, even if it has less chance to see them.

Tigrisek/Tigers
Megint nehéz téma, a tigrisek a kedvenc szárazföldi állataim.
Another difficult topic for me, tigers are my dream terrestrial animals. Beautiful, majestic animals and this could be thought by a lot of people, so Thailand's tourism is taking an advantage of this. In 'buddhist' tiger temples, the monks are keeping the tigers chained, sedated, trading with their organs (endangered species), and cops found cubs in the freezer. There was an investigation for 2 years, they revealed animal abuse and trafficking, so now you can understand why I used quotation marks for the buddhists. Real buddhists would never do that. If you don't want to believe me, please check this blog, maybe you'll believe to the CWI and the photos.

When I was in Thailand, one of our guides recommended to visit the closest 'zoo', because according to them, they are treating the elephants well, so I went to visit this place with my friend. We did not want to ride, but wanted to meet with the elephants. Big regret. You would think that people are taking good care of something which makes them money, but this is a misbelief. That elephant just vegetated, kept on a chain, and we had to ask the owner, not to hit the animal when it did not want to come close. We cried when we left the place, and even if I felt a little bad, immediately started to look for an organization to report the abusing. I wrote to the Elephant Nature Park, and they gave me two contacts. I wrote both and even if I did not get any answer, I think I did the right thing, this was the least I could do. I felt bad for paying this attraction, but I could attach pictures to my report as a proof. And here's a video which shows, why should everyone avoid these attractions.

Veszélyeztetett fajok/Endangered species
Orrszarvú, elefánt, tigris, cápa, tobzoska, ördögrája... csak pár veszélyeztetett állatfaj, melyek a vadászatnak köszönhetően a kihalás szélére sodródnak. És hogy jön ez a turizmushoz? Szuvenír, keleti gyógyszer, különleges fogás készül belőlük, nagyrész a turisták igényeinek kielégítésére.
Rhinos, elephants, tigers, sharks, pangolins, manta rays... just some of the endangered, vulnerable species which are facing extinction because of poaching. And what's the connection with tourism and traveling? Souvenirs, oriental medicines, unique meals are made from these animals, mostly to satisfy tourists' pretensions. This is a very complex topic, I could write a post five times longer than this, but if you are interested in this topic, ask, or watch the Discovery documentary Racing Extinction.

Short

Egy gyors helyzetelemzés:
Dubaiba 3 dologért kell visszamennem:
- az edzőterem miatt
- a La Perle előadást megnézni
English:
Quick summary:
I have to go back to Dubai for three things:
- the muay thai training
- the La Perle circus play
- because I left my sleeping 'pillow' there...
Btw on my way to the Philippines, I'm sitting in the first row... alone... maybe I can survive the 9 hour long flight like this (in a fcking uncomfortable seat).
Note: my sleeping 'pillow' is at home now, a veeery kind relative took it home... but now I have a new friend there so I should visit her :) 17.07.2018.

Living/Leaving Tonga

So I disappeared again, I did not have any proper devices to write as long and complete as I wished, so now I'm going to try to complete at least the Tongan part of my blog. This probably going to be the last and maybe the longest post about my beloved Tonga.
I already posted a map about the whereabouts of the country and wrote posts about my everyday life there, but I only got to know the Real Tonga after I left the awesome resort where I worked.
Some information about the country: 748 square meters of land, 700.000 square meters in total, around 170 islands, 36 inhabited, the population is around 100.000. Methodists, Mormons, Catholics. Every Sunday is free, no shops are open, no public transportation (no flights, no ferries), etc. and this is the time when the family gathers together, eating traditional food (Lu).
My first real meeting with the Polynesian culture (not counting the animation Moana/Vaiana) was in New-Zealand: I went into the Auckland Museum, which presented the Māori culture: traditional houses, boats (waka-s), dresses, accessories, weapons, everything. And from a sudden idea, I decided to watch (and pay for) a traditional performance: dance, singing. I watched it with open-mouthed.

 Video: Maori culture

S miután 3 hétig élhettem a 'Moana-életet' (kis mosogatással megbolondítva) a tongai álom-szigeten, bálnákkal, fantasztikus emberekkel körülvéve (Ha'apai, Uoleva, Sea Change Eco Retreat <3 )
And after 3 months of living the 'Moana-life' (spiced with a little dish-washing) on the tongan dream-island, with whales, surrounded by fantastic people (at Ha'apai, Uoleva, Sea Change Eco Retreat <3)

Csak egy kis nasi. Just some snack.

Minden péntek 'Tongai péntek', tongai tánccal, étellel (hal, malac). Every Friday 'is Tongan Friday' with traditional tongan dance and food (fish, pig).

 Web: Sea Change

úgy döntöttem, elég a lustálkodásból, kicsit szívesen megnézném milyen is az igazi tongai élet, így  áthajóztam Vava'u-ra.

I decided, enough of the laziness, I would like to see the Real Tongan life, so I sailed to Vava'u.

Even if I tried to protest, I lived with my dear colleague's and friend's family for a week. They took me into their family, we went hiking together, fed me, and I cannot really express my gratitude and my love for them. I really enjoyed and loved that week.
Random banana anytime, anywhere.

 Kirándulás tongai családommal.
Hiking with my family.

Katolikus misére menet, kölcsön tradicionális csinos ruhában.
Going to Catholic mass, in traditional dress.

 Vasárnapi családi ebéd.
Sunday family lunch.

Utolsó estémen megsütöttek nekem egy malacot. Nem tudok elég hálás lenni a szeretetükért.
For my last night, they roasted a pig for me. I cannot be grateful enough for them.

I was crying when I left the country... I miss my friends, my family, the fresh banana and coconut, I even miss the fish.... I miss their kindness, their music, their dance, the sand under my feet, the nights with bonfire and dancing at the beach, I miss the whales, what were all over in the country.
But I took a little part with me, at least, which will remind me of everything, forever.

Whales - Tofua'a

So I disappeared for some times, for several reasons:
1. we had no internet for a week
2. I was having so much fun, had no time for writing
3. I was swimming with the whales two times, but I needed time and good pics/devices to write a complete, complex post about them

Szoval.
So. Originally I was 3 times for whale-watching but for the first time, we could not swim, they did not wanted. I think it was better this way, if I was swimming with them immediatelly for the first time, I think I could not handle my overflowing feelings. So for the first time, I was only watching them breaching from the distance.

But after that, I think I experienced the most, what some could wish from the whale swimmings. For the second time, we have met with 4 mother and calf combo, swam with 2. It was amazing to see, how a mother taking care of her baby, teaching, guarding, keeping the baby on her nose, or when the baby is jumping out of the water out of curiosity.
And when you are in the water with the others, and someone is swimming just right in front of you so you cannot see the whale, swimming next to that person and the whale is face to face with you in 10 meters, and you are holding your breath because of your emotions, while they are by-passing, because they want to be alone (which we were respecing so let them go).... just incredible.

The photo is an illustration, because you are not really paying attention about taking photos in times like this, so credithttp://www.tonywublog.com/journal/humpback-whales-in-tonga-2012-part-5/ )

A kovetkezo kepeket a guide-unk csinalta a turan, aki hivatasos fotos is, en is ezeket a balnakat lattam. Next photos were taken by our guide on our whale swimming trip, I was swimming with these whales. https://www.facebook.com/ejsencounters/

(Az en vagyok es ezek a balnak)
(That is me and these whales)

Lattad a szemet, amint azon gondolkozott, mit akarunk, s o mit csinaljon velunk. Kozel volt, nagyon kozel, pont alattunk.
The second time was different. We have met with a mom and calf AND their escort (a male) immediatelly in the morning. The weather was cloudy, the visibility in the water was not so good, so while we were trying to swim closer to the playing mom and calf, the escort suddenly appeared below, watching us. We could see his eyes, thinking about what are we, what do we want, what should he do with us. It was really close, exactly under us.

(A kepeket az aznapi guide-unk csinalta/ Photos by our guidehttps://www.instagram.com/travcampbell/?hl=en )

Aztan talalkoztunk egyel ami megorvendeztetett minket egy full breach-csel, amirol persze nincs video mert a semmibol jott, senki nem szamitott ra, de teljes testtel kiugrott, valahogy ugy, ahogy a kepen:
After this encounter, we have met a happy one, who did a full breach for us (of course, no video or photo, because it came from nowhere, noone expected it, but it looked exactly like in this piucture):

Then nothing for hours, when suddenly a nightmare: an entangled whale with a whole anchor with rope. Our guides checked her, the situation was really desperate and serious, because the anchor was pulling her tail down, it was heavy, and the rope was 3-4 times tangled to her tail. We had noyhing just a rusty small knife. Our luck was the fijian whale watching yacht, what was close to us, and came immediatelly for our call: with whale guides, dive masters, safety divers, and the most important: equipments. In 4 hours of trying, they freed the whale, and it was incredible to see and feel the unity, worrying, goodwill, and the succes of saving a life.

(Foto a Naia honlapjarol van, a teljes sztorit itt olvashatjatok/Credit and the whole story from the Naia, herehttps://www.naia.com.fj/blog/haapai-humpback-whale-rescue/)

I think, I could not ask for more, and I did not even mentioned the sunsets on the beach, when whales were breaching from the water at the horizon....

Mindennapi élet 2. - Daily life in Tonga 2.

While working in the kitchen, you're revaluing your life a little. You are happy for every little, tasty leftover or licking the bowls - for wich are usually everyone is always happy (okay we are not eating the guests' leftovers, just which are from the cooking and baking).
Life is getting really hard when you don't like (or hate) fish and your colleagues like spear-fishing. So you are eating fish for breakfast, for lunch, for dinner, for snack and during the whole day. At least, these are real, healthy, white-meated seafishes.
If I need some personal space to avoid the 'crowd', I can go to the other side of the island which is totally empty, and I only have to survive the 20 minutes walk across the spidey-jungle.
And you can ask the tongan Pocahontas to braid your hair (my colleague and namesake, Fane ❤️)
And if lunchtime gets us during snorkeling, just hopping out in a random, uninhabitant island and the guys are chopping up some fresh coconuts...

És mostantól angolul is írom a blogom (meg visszamenőleg is elfordítom a posztokat), szóval bocsi előre is a szar angolért 😊 .
And from now on, I'm going to write in english too, and slowly translating my previous posts, too, so excuse me for my poor english, and enjoy 😊.
