Offtopic - Teknőskifutó építés - Building a tortoise enclosue

 Nyaralásaink mellett egyik legnagyobb nyári projektünk a teknőskifutó építése volt. Ezúton köszönném meg Édesapámnak, Férjemnek, Édesanyámnak, a szomszédainknak és egyéb segítőkész rokonaimnak a rengeteg segítséget a nyár során, illetve a türelmet, mivel csak hétvégéken tudtunk haladni, akkor is csak jó időben, és 32 fok alatt, szóval elég lassan ment, de végül nyár végére sikerült, és a téli álomra való felkészülést már nálunk töltik az állatkáim. 
Bár a blogom profilja főként az utazás, néha azért írok állatos témában is, és szerintem ez a fajta barkácsolás is egy belső utazás, ezért leírom részletesen a készítés folyamatát.

Besides our summer holidays, we had a big project: building an enclosure for my tortoises. I would like to use this opportunity to thank my Dad, Husband, and Mom for their enormous help and patience during the process. It was challenging as we could only move forward on weekends if the weather was nice (with no rain, wind, or under 32 degrees), but at the end of the summer, we finished, and my little reptiles are spending the preparation time for hibernation in their forever home. 
Even though my blog is mainly about traveling (and sometimes animals), this kind of DIY activity is truly challenging and an inner journey, so I am writing our making process step by step. 

Szóval nyár elején kezdtünk neki. Kiválasztottunk egy kellően napos de megfelelő mértékben árnyékot is kapó helyet, amit megtisztítottunk. Kitaláltuk a méretét, majd megvettük az alap 'hozzávalókat': betonszegély, fadeszkák, faoszlopok, vakondháló, festék, kavics, drain cső, ezek voltak az első körben szükségesek. 

So we started in May. Found the perfect, sunny but shadowy enough place which we cleared. We planned its size and bought the materials for the first round: concrete border, wooden boards, wooden posts, mole net, paint, gravel, and drain pipe.

Az üres terület - The place

Először is kiástunk egy 1,2 x 2 méteres alapot, kb 20 cm mélyen. Édesanyám remek tükröt tud ásni, úgyhogy az elnagyolt 'lukásás' után átadtuk neki a terepet, és nemhogy 'sima' tükröt ásott nekünk, de lejtőset is.

A lejtő egyik sarkába beraktuk a drain csövet, rászórtuk a sok kavicsot, ez fogja majd elvezetni az esetlegesen felgyűlő vizet.

Mindezek után leraktuk az egyik sor betonszegélyt, majd a vakondhálót (néhol duplán), le is szúrkáltuk, reménykedve, hogy az esetlegesen arratévedő patkányoknak megnehezíti a dolgát, és tavasszal nem fogjuk üresen találni a kifutót, mert a téli álomban kiássák esetleg magukat. A vakondháló lerakása felettébb idegőrlő volt, mert folyton beleakadtunk, meg összeakadtak, ráadásul jól kifeszítve kellett leteríteni, úgyhogy ezzel megküzdöttünk.

First of all, we dig a 1.2 x 2-meter base, about 20 cm deep. My mother can dig a mirror very well, so after we dug a rough hole, we handed over the field to her, and she not only dug a 'smooth' mirror for us, but also a sloped one.

We put the drain pipe in one corner of the slope and sprinkled a lot of gravel on it, this will drain the water that may accumulate.

After all that, we put down one row of concrete curbs, then the mole net (double in some places), and pierced it, hoping that it would make it difficult for the rats that might wander in, and that we won't find the run empty in the spring, because they might dig themselves out during their hibernation. Laying down the mole net was extremely nerve-wracking because we kept getting caught in it, and they got tangled up, and besides, it had to be spread out well stretched, so we struggled with that.

A vakondhálókat a rájuk rakott másik sor betonszegéllyel rögzítettük, a 2 sor pedig azért is volt jó, hogy a deszka oldalak azon támaszkodhassanak. Ez a remek találmány egyébként Édesapám ötlete volt, és végülis nagyon jól funkcionál. Majd visszalapátoltuk a földet a vakondhálóra.

The mole nets were fixed with the other row of concrete edges which were placed on them, and the 2 rows were also good so that the plank sides could lean on them. By the way, this great invention was my father's idea, and in the end, it works very well. Then we shoveled the earth back onto the mole net.

Ezután jött a deszkák méretre vágása, csiszolása, lefestése, majd összeillesztése - csavarozása. A sarkokra oszlopokat raktunk, megerősítésnek. Az alap ennyi volt. A kifutót beszórtam teknősöknek való gyomkeverékkel (ez, mint később kiderült, nem teljesen úgy sült el, ahogy azt vártam).

After that, the boards were cut to size, sanded, painted, and then joined and screwed. We put columns on the corners for reinforcement. That was the basis. I sprinkled the enclosure with a weed mixture for tortoises (this, as it turned out, did not turn out quite as well as I expected).

A gyomkeverék szépen kikelt, de a 'kedvesebb' és kisebb gyermekláncfű, pipacs és lóhere helyett az agresszív olajretek és ragacsos muhar vette át az uralmat, úgyhogy ezt egy kicsit újra kell majd kalibrálnom (szerencsére sok útifű kihajtott). Ültettem még levendulát (szegény az megdöglött), rozmaringot, mentát és kövirózsát, és csenkeszt (szerintem ez is megdöglött), meglátjuk, jövőre mi lesz a helyzet növény-téren.

The weed mix came out nicely, but instead of the 'kinder' and smaller dandelions, poppies, and clovers, the aggressive oil radishes and sticky fly ash took over, so I'll have to recalibrate that a bit (luckily, lots of plantains sprouted). I also planted lavender (the poor one died), rosemary, mint, and sempervivum, and fenugreek (I think it also died), we'll see what the situation will be next year in terms of plants.

Ezután jött a teteje: Bramac léceket, csirkehálót vettünk. Szintén méretre váguk a léceket, lecsiszoltuk, lefestettük, majd két keretet készítettünk belőlük, amire rákapcsoztuk a csirkehálót. A kereteket zsanérokkal az aljához erősítettük, és az elejére majd lakatpántokat teszünk, hogy le lehessen lakatolni (állat se tudja felpiszkálni, és ember se).

Then came the top: we bought Bramac slats and chicken nets. We also cut the slats to size, sanded them, painted them, and then made two frames out of them, onto which we attached the chicken nets. We attached the frames to the bottom with hinges, and we will put padlocks on the front so that it can be locked (animals and humans cannot pry it open).

A maradék lécekből még egy kis házat is összetákoltunk, lejtős tetővel (vízmértékkel megnéztük, hogy mindenképp lejtsen), és bár mi tettünk rá zsindelyt, nyáron valószínűleg le fogjuk szedni, mert túlságosan felmelegszik.

We even put together a small house from the remaining slats, with a sloping roof, and although we put shingles on it, we will probably take it down in the summer because it gets too hot.
